What's A Doula?

For millennia, childbirth was viewed as a sacred process, where female family and friends gathered around to care for and guide the mother as she welcomes her new baby. However, with the development of modern obstetrics in the last century, women within their communities became estranged from the birth process and lost sufficient knowledge and confidence to help guide a woman into motherhood. Birth became an overmedicalized, invasive experience rather than a physiological, intrinsic, glorious experience.

A doula is a professional labor assistant who provides physical and emotional support to both mom and dad during pregnancy, childbirth, and the early postpartum period. She acts as a guide, an advocate, a confidant, and a trusted friend who helps create an environment of safety.

As opposed to a midwife or an OBGYN, a doula is non-medical. Her role is based on the emotional and educational support that is needed in the birth process, ensuring that the parents are fully educated and informed of their birth rights. A doula helps with physical duties such as non-medical pain relief, nourishing mom and dad, and helping create a birth space that is calm and relaxed. We mother the mother with education, experience, and intuition as we encourage her femininity and innate maternal instincts.

Hi, I'm Sophie Ellison

I have a lifelong love of all things pregnancy, birth, and femininity. My love for life, children, women, and nature are what inspire me to take on the role of servant and friend for the moms, dads, and babies in my community.

I come from a family of birth-workers, which has shaped me immensely. I witnessed the power of women helping women with a unique kindness, compassion, and strength.
I became a doula because I passionately believe that a woman's body is perfectly equipped and beautifully designed by God to flourish in birth completely free of fear, and that we are designed to love, serve, and care for each other throughout this special occasion of life.  My goal is that you have a positive birth experience no matter what.

Testimonials

Testimonial

"Sophie is a naturally gifted woman when it comes to a supportive role in the birthing process. Her care for both mother and child during the vulnerable experience of birth came through in her calm demeanor and confidence to assess and meet my needs as they surfaced. She knew exactly what to do and how to do it. I definitely plan to work with her for each of my following pregnancies and births."

Frequently Asked Questions

Where do you attend births?

I will support you wherever you choose to birth - at home, birth center, or hospital. In a home birth or birth center birth, I love working alongside midwives and whoever else may be on your birth team. Parents usually experience more freedom and less restrictions in a home or birth center birth, which is why I love supporting families in these settings! In a hospital setting, I will assist in making the hospital environment more comfortable for the mother and family members who may be present, setting the tone for the birth. My role in the hospital may also include advocating for the parents desired birth plan, helping to prevent medical malpractice as well as unnecessary interventions both during labor and postpartum.

I have familial support, do I need a doula?

Most, but not all mothers have a spouse or other family member supporting her throughout this process. I find that the husband or significant other is more involved in the process when they have a doula there to guide them on how to best provide support. It can be difficult for a family member to know how to help. As a doula, while I am trained to provide all the support myself if needed, I am also trained to help your support person serve you better. Often doulas and the support person work together to provide the continuous attention you will need. Doulas do not take the place of the support person, but instead supplement their attention and care with her own knowledge and experience.

Are there medical benefits to hiring a doula?

The continous care of a doula during pregnancy and labor has been shown to improve birth outcomes in many studies. These improved outcomes include: - Increased spontaneous vaginal birth - Shorter duration of labor - Decreased cesarean birth - Decreased use of analgesia - Higher Apgar scores for infants (measures infant health after birth)

What does a doula actually do?

Your healthcare provider and nurses are responsible for the birth outcome. Their primary job is monitering labor, assesing the medical condition of mom and baby, and treating complications if they arise. A doula's primary role is to provide non-medical, nonjudgemental emotional, physical, and spiritual support. How are YOU really doing? She posseses a sophisticated mix of counseling skills, she can translate medical terms for the family, teach physical support strategies such as massage and hip squeezes, and explain pain coping techniques. She can provide soothing comfort measures such as pressure points, massage, hair braiding, nurtrition and hydration aid, words of encouragement, prayer, and more based on the desires of the mother. Photos and video are another wonderful bonus of having a doula present!
